The Underlying Mechanisms of Depression

09 Feb 2017

This is a story about depression… and an important mechanism that emerging research shows may have a very interesting relationship with this condition that affects so many people. That mechanism is systemic inflammation. Inflammation can be caused by emotional/social stress, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, lack of sleep and more.

While we may find out that there’s more going on in this condition than *just* inflammation, as a potential therapeutic target for a lifestyle intervention, inflammation holds a lot of promise. This is because it is something that is easily biologically quantifiable, affected by a wide variety of lifestyle changes… and also because evidence shows that low inflammation also has a very important relationship with successful ageing and health in general.
